News - EdGCM
Written by Mark Chandler
The new EdGCM website includes a software update to EdGCM, a new visualization utility (now in beta testing), and new discussion forums. Please update your bookmarks, browse around, and check back regularly. The new EdGCM website will be dynamic with recent climate news, EdGCM science results, and interaction with the EdGCM community. Our goal with this new site is to move EdGCM from a software project to a community built around the software and science, learning from, teaching, and sharing with each other.

EdGCM.Columbia.edu

First and foremost, EdGCM is no longer hosted on the http://edgcm.org/ website, but has moved to http://edgcm.columbia.edu/. This new domain provides us with significantly higher bandwidth, gigabytes of storage for the project, and an entirely new web site featuring:
  • Changing content
  • Interactive polls and questionnaires
  • Relevant articles from other climate websites via RSS
  • User input and articles
  • And more...
This initial release contains all the material from the old website plus one or two new articles. Come back again as this site will continue to grow as we and you, the EdGCM community, provide news, science, articles, and data.

Forums

In addition to the new main page, we have migrated our forums to http://forums.edgcm.columbia.edu/

If you had an account on our old forum site your profile (username, password, and all posts) should have migrated to the new one. Please review and This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if you see any problems. If you are new to the EdGCM website we invite you to register with our forums, read what others have written, and post any questions you may have.

EdGCM 2.5

EdGCM 2.5 is a minor update to the EdGCM suite. The most significant new feature is that the installer includes EVA (see below). The list of other bug fixes and improvements can be found on the downloads page.

EVA

Last but not least, we are also releasing the EdGCM Visualization Application (EVA) for public beta testing.

EVA is an application written in REALbasic and IDL that enables the user to plot raster images of geo-gridded (geo-referenced) data or line plot outputs from EdGCM. Dependingon the type of data available, EVA can be used to create displays in a variety of ways:
  • Plot longitude-latitude data as global maps
  • Overlay continent outlines or masks on longitude-latitude plots
  • Display specific latitude-longitude or latitude-vertical arrays from larger multidimensional variables as slices
  • Use any of the numerous colorbars provided or add a custom colorbar
  • Save plots to disk as PNG images
EVA is available from our downloads page. Please submit any bugs you find through our development site.
